Solana Locks In Oct. 21 for Alpenglow, Its Biggest Consensus Overhaul
Solana finally has a date for its biggest consensus rewrite. Anza has locked Alpenglow's mainnet migration for Wednesday, Oct. 21, at about 10:50 a.m. ET — epoch 1064 on the Solana Foundation's calendar.
What actually changes
Alpenglow throws out TowerBFT and replaces it with Votor. Validators stop stuffing vote transactions into blocks and instead message each other directly, bundling those votes into certificates that finalize a block in one or two rounds.
Finality falls from roughly 12.8 seconds to a target of about 150 milliseconds. That is more than a speed flex. Votes leaving the ledger frees blockspace for real user transactions, while execution, fees and the SVM stay untouched.
The design also keeps running with up to 40% of stake offline or adversarial, up from the old one-third assumption.
The handoff is its own event
The feature gate flips at an epoch boundary, and 5,000 slots later blocks briefly carry votes only. Validators then confirm an Alpenglow genesis certificate backed by 82% of stake, roll back the vote-only blocks and resume user activity under Votor. Anza expects the whole handoff to take hundreds of milliseconds.
Operators have homework
Validators need a client built on Agave 4.3.0. Firedancer and Frankendancer are not supported during the migration. Vote accounts must also hold at least 0.8 SOL above the rent-exempt minimum for the new per-epoch admission fee, or the validator stops voting the next epoch.
Indexers and trading infrastructure carry their own load. Anything streaming through Geyser or gRPC has to tell candidate blocks apart with bank_id instead of slot alone. Vote transactions vanish from blocks, so reported transaction counts drop sharply even though no real activity is lost.
Why you should care
Ordinary users have nothing to do, since signing and sending transactions work the same. But confirmed and finalized collapse into one state, so developers should only switch to finalized after activation, not before.
The payoff is practical. Exchanges and bridges can credit deposits in a fraction of the wait they budget today, and DeFi apps get to stop treating 13 seconds of uncertainty as normal.
