MNX Opens an AI Futures Exchange Where Private Labs Get a Tradable Price
Private AI companies just became tradable without a stock listing. A new venue called MNX opened on Tuesday with futures tied to OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek and Moonshot.
What MNX actually sells
The exchange was built by the team behind Manifold Markets and settles on MegaETH, an Ethereum layer 2. It raised $6.4 million in June, led by Village Global, with Cambrian, North Island Ventures, Finality Capital and Relay Digital joining. The headline product is a dated future that expires at the end of 2027 and charges no recurring funding fee.
Why not a perpetual
Perpetual futures need a price that updates constantly, and private AI shares do not have one — they change hands rarely and are hard to value. Anchor a perp to a stale number and the funding rate quietly becomes the real price, which is easy to push around. Dated contracts skip that problem: they settle once, against a defined event.
The fine print
Quotes on MNX come from trading on MNX itself, not from an outside feed. If a company is still private at expiry, settlement falls back on valuations from funding rounds, funds or secondary markets, and the venue can set the price itself as a last resort. Leverage runs to three times your money, so losses scale too, and US traders are not supported yet.
What to check before you trade
- Settlement: the reference price is venue-made, so your payout can differ from what a real private share sale would clear at.
- Custody: funds stay onchain on MegaETH and the exchange says it never takes custody of user balances.
Why it matters to crypto traders
The pitch rests on one gap: AI is absorbing one of the largest investment cycles on record while the financial plumbing around it stays thin. Bigger exchanges already list AI exposure, so MNX's bet is narrower — dated, fee-free contracts for traders who hate paying funding forever. It also runs 200-millisecond batch auctions, clearing every order in a window at a single price instead of racing them. Markets on company revenue, hiring, compute capacity and the AI supply chain are next.
Watch liquidity, not the pitch. Thin order books plus a venue that can fall back on its own settlement price is a lot of trust to place in one team, and whether real volume shows up is the open question.
