Filecoin Vesting Ends, Cutting New FIL Issuance by 75%
Filecoin's biggest scheduled source of new tokens is about to shut off. The six-year vesting stream for Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation ends on October 15, 2026.
The tap that is closing
At launch in October 2020, Protocol Labs received 300 million FIL and the Filecoin Foundation took 100 million, both unlocking in a straight line over six years. That combined schedule has been releasing roughly 68 million FIL every year.
Gross annual additions from vesting plus block rewards sit near 89 million FIL today. At the latest mining pace, they fall to about 21 million after the deadline — a cut of roughly 75%.
What does not change
Storage providers keep earning. Block rewards are untouched by the vesting deadline, and 25% of what a miner earns unlocks immediately while the rest vests over 180 days.
Total supply does not shrink either. Only the speed at which new coins appear changes, and with about 833 million FIL already circulating, the disappearing stream equals roughly 8.16% of existing supply per year.
Why traders should care
Supply cuts are crypto's oldest narrative, and this one was written into the token's code back in 2020, so the date has been public for years.
The market barely flinched. FIL moved 3.64% across a 12-hour window around the coverage, then closed the day roughly flat. That looks like repositioning rather than a repricing.
Demand is the part that actually decides this. Filecoin is timing the issuance drop alongside Filecoin Onchain Cloud and Fil One, both pitched at paid on-chain usage instead of raw storage capacity.
Fewer new coins only matter if somebody still wants to buy them.
