Tether Froze $1.45M in THORChain Vaults Without Warning, Then Reversed It

Market Intel · Just now · Not financial advice

Tether froze roughly $1.45 million in USDT held in THORChain's cross-chain vaults, then reversed the action without explanation.

What happened

Chad Barraford, technical co-founder of the cross-chain swap protocol, posted on X that Tether had blacklisted four THORChain vault addresses holding about 1.45 million USDT combined. He reported roughly two hours later that all addresses were unfrozen and trading would resume. "We don't know why this choice was made and have had no comms with USDT before this action," Barraford wrote, adding that the team hoped it was "made in error / misunderstanding." The freeze forced THORChain to suspend TRON-related swaps before services were restored.

A pattern of freezes

The incident is not isolated. Earlier in the same week, cross-border payments platform Conduit Technology filed a lawsuit alleging Tether froze $2.76 million in USDt tied to a Brazilian investigation from 2024. In August, two Thai nationals sued Tether for allegedly freezing $42.4 million after an informal request from US Homeland Security Investigations. Tether did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the THORChain incident.

Why it hits DeFi

THORChain is built for permissionless cross-chain swaps — exactly the kind of infrastructure that cannot function if a stablecoin issuer can halt its funds at will. The freeze targeted the protocol's own vault infrastructure, not a user account, which raises the stakes. If Tether can blacklist addresses tied to a decentralized network, the same mechanism could be applied to any protocol holding USDT.

The bigger question

Censorship resistance is the pitch. Stablecoins that can be frozen by a single company undermine that promise. For DeFi builders, this is another reminder that USDT counterparty risk is not hypothetical — it has been exercised repeatedly. The hope is that pressure from protocols and regulators pushes toward more transparent freeze policies. Until then, every DeFi project holding significant USDT exposure is one blacklist away from disruption.
