Sui Foundation Puts $30M Into DATA Network, Which Will Retire Its Own Chain

Market Intel · Just now · Not financial advice

The Sui Foundation is putting $30 million into DATA Network, an AI training-data protocol that is about to stop running its own blockchain.

The biggest seat in the room

The investment makes Sui Foundation the largest institutional holder in DATA Network, alongside existing backers PIP Labs and DATA Foundation. Walrus, the storage network built by Sui's original developer, becomes the default home for DATA Foundation's data.

A chain that retires itself

DATA Network will be rebuilt to run natively on Sui, and its standalone chain will be retired. Holders of the DATA token move across on a one-to-one basis, with the old network staying live until the switch is complete. No date has been published yet — the foundation says a detailed timeline will land before the upgrade goes live.

What Trace actually records

Trace, the registry launched alongside the network in June, logs where AI training data came from, which rights apply to it, and who should be paid. It has recorded more than 250 million contributions and now processes over 3 million receipts a day, according to the foundation. Partner app Kled is registering 1.5 billion user-consented records, with licensing deals and stablecoin payouts routed through the network.

Why this matters

For Sui, the bet is that AI data infrastructure brings real onchain usage instead of another partnership headline. For DATA holders, the risk sits in the migration schedule: a one-to-one swap sounds clean until the mechanics and deadlines show up. Watch the timeline, not the announcement.
