Ledger Investigates Crypto Loss Tied to Southeast Asia Reseller
Ledger is investigating reports of cryptocurrency losses connected to a reseller operating in Southeast Asia, in a separate incident from the broader reseller compromise that affected customers globally.
The investigation was initiated after multiple customers in the region reported losses that appeared to be connected to their purchase of hardware wallets through the affected reseller. Ledger has not disclosed the total amount lost or the number of customers impacted in Southeast Asia specifically.
The Southeast Asia incident appears to be distinct from the global reseller compromise announced earlier, which involved a different reseller and a different attack vector. The company has stated that the two incidents are not connected.
Ledger has advised customers who purchased hardware wallets through resellers in Southeast Asia to verify the integrity of their devices before use. A compromised wallet can be modified in ways that are difficult to detect but that allow an attacker to steal funds.
The company has been working with law enforcement in the affected jurisdictions and has stated that it is committed to identifying those responsible for the losses.
The incident is a reminder that the security of a hardware wallet depends not only on the device itself but on the entire supply chain through which it reaches the customer. A single compromised reseller can undermine the security of every customer who purchased through that channel.
