BNY and Citadel Securities Settle a Tokenized Treasury Repo in Minutes
BNY and Citadel Securities just settled a tokenized US Treasury trade on Tradeweb, and the collateral moved in minutes rather than a business day.
What actually changed
Citadel Securities bought a two-year Treasury that was tokenized on BNY's private digital ledger, then used it as collateral for an overnight repo financing in cash from BNY. The deal was a three-party repurchase transaction, and the bank describes it as the first time tokenized assets have been used on a major repo platform. Settlement ran in minutes instead of the standard T+1 cycle.
The calendar is the real problem
Treasuries settle on business days while stablecoins and tokenized funds trade continuously, which forces issuers to hold buffers or accept timing risk on redemptions. BNY plans to pilot tokenized Treasuries on its own blockchain by the end of 2026, with round-the-clock settlement of both conventional and tokenized Treasuries as the 2027 goal. It clears $24.3 trillion a day as a triparty repo agent and processes $2.5 trillion in payments daily.
Two roads, one destination
Citadel already created and moved tokenized Treasuries on the Canton Network through the Depository Trust Company's tokenization service in live production earlier this year. DTCC's fuller service is scheduled for a voluntary October 2026 launch covering US Treasuries and selected ETFs. That sets up two competing paths — shared industry networks like Canton, or bank-owned chains like BNY's.
Why this matters for crypto
Tokenized Treasuries are the collateral layer under stablecoins and onchain funds, so cheaper repo settlement feeds straight into the cost of running them. Three things are worth watching: how many firms opt into DTCC's service, whether BNY's pilot ships on time, and how much tokenized collateral gets used in live trading rather than pilots.
