Base Creator Predicts Tokenised Equities and Non-Dollar Stablecoins

The creator of Base, Coinbase's layer-2 network, has predicted that tokenised equities and non-dollar stablecoins will become major drivers of on-chain activity in the coming years.

Tokenised equities represent real-world shares issued as blockchain tokens, enabling fractional ownership and around-the-clock trading without traditional market hours or intermediaries.

Non-dollar stablecoins, pegged to currencies other than the US dollar, could see rapid adoption in regions where local currency volatility makes dollar-denominated stablecoins less practical.

The prediction reflects Base's growing role as a platform for on-chain financial products. The network has seen increasing activity from applications that go beyond simple token transfers into more complex financial use cases.

The regulatory environment for tokenised securities remains uncertain in most jurisdictions. In the United States, the SEC has taken the position that many tokenised securities offerings require registration, which limits the speed at which the market can develop.

Despite the regulatory complexity, the trend is clear. The infrastructure for tokenised assets is being built now, and the question is not whether they will become significant, but when and under what regulatory framework.
