A 19 Million Token Mint Wiped 92% Off Autheo's THEO in a Day

Market Intel · Just now · Not financial advice

Autheo's native token THEO lost almost all of its value in a single day, and the damage came from coins that were never supposed to exist. Someone minted 19 million THEO on Base without authorization, then sold them straight into the market.

The mint that broke the pool

THEO fell 92% inside its Hydrex pool on Base, sliding from roughly $0.08 to about $0.006 within a day. The attacker reportedly swapped the freshly minted tokens for around 700.8 ETH, worth about $1.76 million at the time. Hydrex held thin liquidity for THEO, which amplified the sell pressure far beyond what a deeper market would have absorbed.

The proceeds were moved off Base rather than parked there, and assets that leave the chain where the incident happened are much harder to claw back.

What Autheo told holders

The team's guidance was blunt: do not buy, do not sell, do not bridge THEO while it investigates. Trading restrictions stay in place until the project issues an official all-clear.

Autheo moves THEO between its own mainnet, Base and Robinhood Chain using a Hyperlane-based bridge, with the Base version issued as a synthetic token minted one-for-one against coins locked on the origin chain. That design makes a mint bug brutal, because forged supply looks identical to real supply until someone reconciles both sides.

The root cause is still open

Nobody has confirmed what actually failed. It remains unconfirmed whether the relayer key was compromised, misconfigured, or used by an authorized party.

As of October 13, no technical postmortem had been published and the full scope of losses was still unconfirmed. Autheo had been audited by Halborn, CertiK and Avelar Labs — a reminder that an audit is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

Why this matters if you hold bridged tokens

Autheo calls itself a Layer-0 operating system with an integrated Layer-1, and its mainnet went live on May 14, 2026. THEO is the network's native utility coin, and it began public trading on August 20, 2026 on Hydrex against USDC at a reference price of $0.05.

If you hold wrapped or synthetic tokens on any chain, verify the contract you own before you touch it: the official bridged THEO contract on Base is 0xebE516a20238F79DC20b07eaD6768e08891Ed309. Then ask the harder question — who holds the mint key, and what happens to your bag if that key goes wrong?
